What is Counselling?
Counselling is talking together, in a secure place, about your concerns. It enables you space and time to gain understanding and explore issues. The form of counselling practised is “person centred counselling”. This is a non-directive form of counselling which represents the autonomy of the individual and their ability to find their own solutions, promoting self-acceptance and personal freedom. Counselling is carried out in the privacy of Southport Osteopathy, a multi-disciplinary practice.
How can counselling help?
The way a counsellor can help will depend on the person receiving the treatment. For many, the fact that counselling offers a safe and confidential environment to speak in is all it takes. In life, what we say to others can sometimes have a knock-on effect, altering relationships and the way people see each other. Counselling eliminates this problem and offers you the space and freedom to explore your own thoughts without judgment.
While I may not give you concrete advice or a checklist of things to do to feel better, what I will do is help you uncover your own insight and understanding of your problems providing you with the tools which will help you to resolve them on your own.
In the majority of cases, a single session will not be enough to help overcome any issues you’re facing. Counselling is a journey, and it takes time and consistency to work effectively. Because of this, many people opt for regular counselling sessions to make the most of the process.
Counselling can help you understand yourself better and the way you think, which will ultimately help you develop a clearer understanding of your problems. The more armed with information you are, the easier it gradually becomes to navigate your way through any difficulties you are facing so that eventually you can come out the other side feeling more positive. Counselling can also help you understand other people’s point of view better, which can shed light onto the way you interpret words or actions. Deciding to see a counsellor is the first step to resolving your issues. It is not a quick fix for but it is a place to just be yourself and just talking to someone confidentially who is not a friend or family member can make all the difference.
Each session is 50 minutes in length and is normally weekly. How many sessions depends upon the individual and the issues brought to counselling. I initially offer 6 sessions but further sessions may be negotiated. Counselling can help with issues such as anxiety, depression, panic attacks, low self-esteem, relationship/personal issues and bereavement amongst many other issues. Brief notes are taken at the end of each session and these may be viewed on written request. My service complies with the Data Protection Act 1998.
Confidentiality is kept within my service. However, there are some rare exceptions when this may be broken and these will be discussed on your initial interview. I am a qualified counsellor who receives regular supervision and works to the ethical practice of the British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy.
